Blue Mountain Environmental Consulting, LLC (BMEC) is a consortium of environmental professionals dedicated to the sustainable management of natural resources. We bring a scientific and comprehensive approach to conservation via integrated planning and applied management. We provide ecological services for forests, rangelands, and wetlands. This internship offers a unique opportunity to work on alpine restoration projects in partnership with the Colorado Fourteeners Initiative as well as on a variety of other wetland management, restoration, and natural resource projects around the state. Fourteener projects are managed by the U.S. Forest Service in partnership with the Colorado Fourteeners Initiative (CFI). CFI is a non-profit organization whose mission is to protect and preserve the natural integrity of Colorado's 14,000-foot peaks through active stewardship and public education (www.14ers.org).

Responsibilities

The Restoration Intern is hired by and reports to BMECs Plant Ecologist and will primarily assist with design and implementation of restoration plans for Colorado's fourteen-thousand foot peaks ("Fourteeners"). Other work will include a variety of natural resource management and research projects throughout Colorado, ranging from wetland delineation to wildfire mitigation. The Restoration Intern will spend approximately 90% of his/her time in the field hiking at high altitudes throughout Colorado as well as in lower elevation sites associated with Colorado's many life zones. The Restoration Intern will assist with administrative duties as needed and other tasks as assigned.

Applicants must meet the following requirements: be in excellent physical condition and willing to work at high altitude with a full pack; have an interest in ecological restoration, research, plant ecology, and botany; be self-motivated and passionate about the outdoors; be able to perform multiple logistics tasks; be well organized; and have excellent communication skills. Valid driver's license and personal vehicle (4WD preferred) required. Applicants must be confident in backcountry hiking, camping, and mountain route finding, and should be proficient in topographic map reading. Technical training will be provided. Field botany, ecology, restoration, horticulture, and gardening experience is helpful but not required. Certification in CPR and/or Wilderness First Aid preferred. In order to assist with Fourteener restoration programs and other natural resource projects statewide, extensive travel (often with a personal vehicle), as well as evening and weekend work, is required. The Restoration Intern's fieldwork is physically demanding and much of the work is performed at high altitude. Many nights are spent in a backcountry (camping) environment.
