Native Plant Project Leaders needed by Student Conservation Association

CONSERVATION CORPS – NATIVE PLANT PROJECT LEADER OPPORTUNITIES - SPRING 2011

In partnership with the National Park Service, SCA’s Native Plant Corps will train and deploy 4-5 person teams (1 project leader and 3- 4 corps members) during the 2011 Spring season in order to promote conservation leadership by providing hands on experience with field work and outreach exercises. There are currently four confirmed Native Plant Project Leader opportunities in the following areas:
  • Grand Canyon National Park (Arizona) Jan - May
  • Saguaro National Park (Arizona) Jan - Oct
  • Congaree National Park (South Carolina) Jan - May
  • Cowpens National Battlefield (South Carolina) Jan - May

Primary Responsibilities: Teams will be working to control invasive species and restore native habitat. Project Leaders typically arrive on site 5 weeks in advance to collaborate with agency partners and SCA staff to: develop a detailed service work plan; manage project implementation; select, train and supervise team members. Additional duties include: ensure quality assurance standards are met; manage project outcomes; and document and report the details of the team’s service, conservation experience and education.

Training Provided: Seattle, WA for 4-5 days in January, 2011. Training will include SCA Policies and Procedures, Budget Management, Website Development, Risk Management. Additional training will include plant identification, driver training, restoration ecology, tool safety & maintenance, Wilderness First Aid/CPR, GIS/GPS technology, volunteer management, and safety.

Qualifications - Required: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience; minimum age requirement 21 years old; field work/outdoor experience; minimum of 2 years leadership experience; strong computer skills; excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; attention to detail; ability to hike up to 4 miles a day on varied terrain. Valid driver’s license and driving record within SCA guidelines; ability to pass SCA background check.

Qualifications - Preferred: Coursework or field experience in botany, ecology, horticulture, natural resource management or environmental science; GPS/GIS familiarity; operating power equipment; trailer driving with a one ton truck; safe driving skills; working with diverse volunteers; living and working outdoors; ability to take initiative and work both independently and as part of a team; public speaking and community outreach experience; plant identification; map & compass skills; enthusiasm for the outdoors; budget management experience and a sense of adventure.

Salary: Starting at $500/ week with some seasonal benefits.
