Executive Director job for Bay Area Ridge Trail Council

Executive Director Job Description

Interim Executive Director Connie Shapiro has initiated the search for a new full-time Executive Director to lead the Council. We are a dynamic regional grassroots organization with a base of over 150 volunteers and 4,000 members plus strong agency and public benefit organization partnerships, and a staff of 6 full time managers, 1part-time volunteer coordinator and 1 part-time bookkeeper. The Council is building a multi-use 500+ mile trail on the ridgelines around the San Francisco Bay and has just dedicated its 300th mile.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Serving as Executive Director at BARTC offers an outstanding opportunity to engage in advocacy with regional, state, and national trail groups, park agencies, land trusts, open space districts and other partners to protect and preserve access to key ridgelines and create a legacy for generations to come.

THE RESPONSIBILITIES

The chief operating officer is responsible for the overall management and performance of the organization including:

-- Lead, develop, and mentor a highly motivated staff of seven professionals.

--Lead fundraising efforts to foundations, corporations, and individuals.

--Manage the advocacy efforts with government agencies and officials as allowed by a 501 (c) 3 organization.

--Serve as the public face of the organization, publicize the activities and help to raise awareness to trail groups, trail users and related groups.

-- Conduct planning, implementation and evaluation of numerous trail projects on public and private lands and other projects that support the mission of the organization.

-- Provide fiscal oversight including budget preparation, financial, and operations management for an organization with an annual budget of over $1million.

-- Provide leadership and support to a 28-member board of directors.

-- Provide leadership and support to volunteer county committees in a nine county regional area and to the Trail Committee.

THE REQUIREMENTS

The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, more than three years of senior management experience of a small to medium size non-profit organization, financial and operational expertise, fundraising experience, strong interpersonal skills, a commitment to multi-use trails and a willingness to actively engage with individuals from diverse backgrounds. The Executive Director reports to a 28+ member Board of Directors consisting of county committee volunteers, trail committee volunteers, agency partners, and at-arge community representatives. Trail user is desirable.
